In a beginning yoga class we attempt to develop a
union between our body and our mind. We also become aware about how this
union helps balance our emotions.
This class follows the traditional Ashtanga Yoga
or the Yoga of Eight Limbs/The Eight-Fold Path of Yoga.
Sage Patanjali’s treatise on yoga, The Yoga
Sutras, codified the first definitive. unified and comprehensive system of
yoga. This is the eight-fold path of yoga, comprising-
Yama
Niyama Asana
Pranayama
Pratyahara
Dharana Dhyana
Samadhi
The science of yoga begins to work on the
outermost aspect of the personality, the physical body, which is, for most
of us, a familiar starting point. It is believed that by keeping the body
steady, gradually the mind too will become steady.
And when the mind is steady, it is spontaneously
more discerning about the yamas
and niyamas.
In this way yoga asanas are a suitable starting
point to experience union between mind and body. And it has to be
understood that postures are a starting point in the journey of yoga and
not an end in themselves.
It is important in this approach to yoga that
postures are performed within the boundaries of one’s own physical
abilities, and over time, increasing one’s abilities.
This is a respect for the first Yama, Ahimsa
(non injury) to oneself and to others.
Also,
if one does a pose beyond one’s capacity it becomes very difficult to
keep your mind on the experience of the pose. The mind will wander away
trying to avoid the discomfort. This will break the harmonious union of
mind with body.

Exercise
Spend time while doing the poses to become fully
aware of the body and immersing your mind completely in the experience.
Keep the focus on your breath and feel the breath travel to the points
where the body experiences the stretch.
Always remember: yoga is non-competitive. Yoga is about
where you direct the mind while doing the asanas and not how far your body
reaches the “perfect” stretch.
